Bible Month Day 18: Genesis 27:1 — 28:9Jacob’s story is a fascinating one. We are told before he is born that he is destined to be the covenantal heir (25:23). Yet he seems determined to force the issue anyway, trying to ensure it through theft.He is devious, greedy, and self-interested. His life seems to echo the failures in Eden and foreshadow the later struggles of the nation of Israel. It is noteworthy here that Jacob refers to the Lord as Isaac’s God (27:20). He isn’t sure yet that he wants to serve God himself; he wants the covenant’s blessings without the responsibilities. As he is exiled,ostensibly to find a suitable wife but mostly for his protection, he does indeed receive the covenant promises (28:3-4).
